Why I winced at the term 'fractional Co Sec’ and what we really bring to the table
Have you noticed the term ‘fractional’ being used in the context of a ‘fractional co sec/company secretary’? I did recently and must admit my face probably pulled that wincing position it tends to do when it doesn’t like something.
The term “fractional” has gained traction across roles such as fractional CFOs, GCs, and now Co Secs. It’s meant to convey flexibility and part-time engagement, rather than being a full-time, in-house employee.
I like to reflect. I gave some thought to why this title jarred with me. It’s the ‘fraction of a whole’ that doesn’t sit right—the implication of being ‘less than whole.’ I understand the reference: you’re not committing your entire self to one role forever. But you’re not getting a fraction of me either. My team and I bring full commitment and expertise to every engagement, regardless of its scope in terms of time.
Traditionally, there has always been a need for an ‘interim Co Sec’ solution to cover significant periods, such as maternity cover or to provide continuity for a role going through recruitment. An interim Co Sec is often an excellent solution for a fixed period; they can embed themselves into that role, providing comfort and know-how to the engaging company— a safe pair of hands.
Conversely, a fractional Co Sec would be used more flexibly, for example, for a smaller organisation that simply doesn’t need a permanent full-time position, or for SMEs and start-ups that need Board support but don’t have the full-time requirements. A fractional Co Sec might simply be providing additional support to existing teams on a project basis (swooping in like a white knight, perhaps). Fractional positions are often part-time or retainer-based, are longer-term or flexible arrangements and are often remote or hybrid roles.
I recognise that the RGS service aligns more closely with the concept of a fractional Co Sec than an interim one. However, I’ve always thought of us as offering ‘transitional Co Sec’ support. Our services are all about purpose and timing, not quantity. We’re strategic and value-driven—not piecemeal. We fulfil a specific need: whether that’s supporting a Co Sec team through a recruitment process, covering maternity leave, or navigating an IPO, takeover, or de-listing.
We help organisations move from one position to another, all while dedicating our full attention, skill, and professionalism. Our goal is to ensure that the Board—and organisation —experience no disruption, no compromise in governance, and no loss of momentum. We don’t immerse ourselves in your team fractionally. We commit as a whole.
