Governance training for Non-Executive Directors
The performance programme for leaders new to the Board
Have you just been appointed to your first Non-Executive Director role? What do you mean no one’s passed you a how-to-be-a-NED manual?
There might be a few handbooks out there for you to flick to chapter, “Contributing to a Board meeting.” Or “Shifting from operating in the business to advising it”. But is there anything that talks you through how to practically apply the knowledge? There is now. That’s where our performance programme for new NEDs comes in.
You’ve got the experience we just need to make sure you’ve got the confidence to use it at Board level.
If you’d like to talk to a member of the team to see if this programme is suitable for you before signing up then drop us a line at and we’ll get back to you.
The performance programme for leaders ready to add value from day one
You’ve built your career delivering results and leading from within an organisation. Whether you’ve been asked to join your Board as an Executive Director or appointed to join an external board as a Non-Executive Director, you’re now being asked to take the broader view and contribute at Board level often without any real guidance on what that looks like in practice.
We’re here to tell you, you don’t need to figure it out by trial and error.
Round Governance’s Non-Executive Director Transition and Performance Programme is CPD approved by CPD UK and designed for leaders moving into their first Board-level role. It’s for those of you who’ve been given the seat and know it deserves more than good intentions.
What makes this programme different?
It’s built by people who understand Board dynamics
Sessions are led by experienced RGS governance public practitioners and CGIUKI approved Board reviewers who’ve worked closely with Boards and Directors, so the programme reflects how Boards function in practice.
It focuses on how you show up, not just what you know
Being effective as a Non-Executive Director is about judgement, behaviour and influence, not just knowledge. This programme is built to develop the mindset and confidence required to operate effectively at Board level.
It’s designed for transition
You’re not starting from scratch. This programme builds on your existing leadership experience and supports your shift from an operational, delivery-focused role to one centred on challenge and independent perspective.
The programme
A one-day course (5 hours), covering:
• NED identity and mindset. The transition from an operational to an oversight mindset and building confidence in independent thought and contribution.
• Reading a Board pack through a strategic lens. Focusing on key issues, risks and strategic implications, not just detail.
• Boardroom presence and contribution. Communicating clearly and adding value alongside executive and non-executive colleagues.
• Expectations, boundaries and independence. The distinction between oversight and management and holding an independent position while building constructive relationships.
• Practical meeting skills. Asking the right questions, managing time and priorities, knowing when to intervene and when to step back.
Applying the learning
This programme is grounded in practical application. Sessions include:
• Discussion of real-life Board scenarios
• Reflection on participants’ own experiences
• Coaching on specific challenges and situations
• Opportunities to practise Board-level thinking and contribution
• Techniques to practice ahead of your next board meeting
Participants are encouraged to bring real situations into the session, so learning is tailored and directly applicable in practice. The aim is simple: to help you leave each session feeling more confident, more effective and better prepared for the realities of Board life.
What you’ll gain
• A clear understanding of the role and expectations of a Non-Executive Director
• Greater confidence contributing effectively in Board discussions
• The ability to review information and identify where challenge is required
• Improved judgement around when to contribute and how to add value
• A stronger sense of independence and Board-level perspective
• Follow-up check-in opportunities to support your ongoing development and impact
